Full course description

In today’s information-rich world, it is essential that students develop the ability to think historically, analyze evidence, and evaluate media with a critical eye. This professional learning course equips secondary social studies teachers with the tools and strategies to implement Document-Based Inquiry (DBI) in their classrooms.

Aligned with the Utah Core Standards, DBI promotes historical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and media literacy. Through guided exploration of both historical and contemporary sources, teachers will learn how to support students in analyzing primary and secondary documents, identifying bias, constructing informed arguments, and participating in civic discourse. Participants will leave prepared to design and facilitate inquiry-driven lessons that empower students to navigate history and current events with critical insight.
