Full course description

In today’s information-rich world, students must develop the skills to think historically, evaluate media with a critical eye, and engage in evidence-based reasoning. This professional learning course equips secondary social studies teachers with the tools and strategies to implement Document-Based Inquiry (DBI) in their classrooms.
Aligned with the Utah Core Standards, DBI supports the development of historical thinking, media literacy, and civic discourse. Teachers will explore how to guide students in analyzing primary and secondary sources, recognizing bias, constructing informed arguments, and making connections between past and present.
Through hands-on exploration of both historical documents and contemporary media, participants will leave prepared to design and facilitate inquiry-driven lessons that foster critical thinking and active citizenship.
In-person sessions will be held October 2, January 7, and April 14.
